Veterinary fluoroscopy is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses X-rays to create a series of images of a pet's body in motion. It's used to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions.
Fluoroscopy is a safe and relatively inexpensive imaging technique that can help reduce pet anxiety during exams.
Swallowing disorders: A veterinarian can use fluoroscopy to observe a pet swallowing different types of food to identify issues like difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, or esophageal motility disorders.
Heart problems: Fluoroscopy can be used to watch the heart beat and diagnose heart problems.
Respiratory issues: Fluoroscopy can be used to watch the trachea change shape as a pet breathes.
Foreign objects: Fluoroscopy can help identify foreign objects in a pet's digestive system.
Tumors: Fluoroscopy can help determine the size and location of tumors.
Joint instability: Fluoroscopy can be used to evaluate for joint instability or laxity.
Urinary bladder issues: Fluoroscopy can be used to diagnose a ruptured urinary bladder or move bladder sludge to differentiate it from a mass.
Fractures: Fluoroscopy can be used to diagnose small fractures in complex joints.
Surgical guidance: Fluoroscopy can be used to guide surgeons during difficult surgical procedures, such as joint replacements, implant positioning, and fracture treatment.
All fluroscopy patients (except exotics and neonates) will be required to be fasted for at least 8 hours prior to their appointment. Not only does this help reduce risks associated with sedation and anesthesia, but this permits better imaging.
This refers to FOOD ONLY. Your pet may continue to have free access to water until their scheduled appointment time.
Unless your primary veterinarian or the veterinarians at AVID direct you to feed your pet prior to arrival (either due to age, species, or possible disease), all patients need to be fasted.
Most fluoroscopy studies performed at AVID will NOT require anesthesia. Some pets may require light sedation or anxiety medication. If this is the case, the staff of AVID will discuss the plan with you prior to your appointment for imaging.
Results will be sent directly to your referring veterinarian so they can continue your pet's care and management.
